The widening work on National Higway (NH)-2 has begun in right earnest. The company eng a g ed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for widening the highway has started constructing the service road at the junctions. Flyovers are to be raised at the junctions.

Once widened, National Highway-2 from Sarai Khwaja to Agra will have six lanes.

After the widening, NH-2 from Sarai Khwaja to Agra will have six lanes. Flyovers are to be built near NHPC Chowk, Badkhal Morh Chowk, Rajiv Gandhi Chowk, Ajronda Chowk, Bata Chowk and Ballabgarh Chowk in Faridabad.

The much-awaited widening of the nearly 180 km AgraBadarpur stretch on NH-2 is scheduled to be completed within two years. Union Minister for Road, Transport and Highways, CP Joshi said this at the foundation stone laying ceremony in Hodal (Palwal district) in May last year. Around 74 km of the stretch is in Haryana and nine flyovers would be constructed on it. The project is estimated to cost Rs 800 crore, which would be developed on the public-private partnership (PPP) mode.

Larsen & Toubro is constructing the flyovers for the concession aire, M/s Reliance Infrastructure. As of now, the highway has only four lanes and on some stretches traffic moves at a snail’s pace due to congestion.

The widening will take place from km no 20.5 (Sarai Khwaja) to km no199.6 (Agra). The total length of the project under widening will be 179.1 kilometre.

NHAI project director, Manoj Kumar Gupta said that digging has started near the Badkhal Morh flyover and Bata Chowk for constructing a service road.

“The road is being widened and constructed near these junctions so that traffic can be diverted on these service roads when the construction of flyovers is on,” he said. The construction work on the Metro rail at these intersections has already been completed and there is a scope for widening the road. The service roads are going to be 8 m wide. The engineers at site said the utility lines such as sewer, water, electricity poles and telephone lines are to be shifted and the concerned departments have been informed to enable them to take suitable action.
