HUDA wakes up to encroachment of its land

  • 4 Aug 2014 Hindustan Times (Delhi)

The blatant infringement made under the garb of greenery outside houses is likely to be done away with soon. The Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) had chosen to ignore this all these years. But acting on the directive of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in a public interest litigation, HUDA has issued a public notice warning people to remove encroachment s outside their premises on public land. They will face action and also bear the expenses incurred on removing the encroachments if they don't do it themselves.

There is no HUDA colony or market across the city where these violations are not visible. However, the authorities have been looking away. In its public notice issued on July 28, thee state officer, HUDA has said that in compliance with the directive of the high court issued on October 9, 2013, all encroachments by house owners and shopkeepers in the form of wares or grills on the greenbelts, road berms, intersections, public corridors and footpaths should be removed within 10 days after which HUDA will get them demolished. HUDA will not be responsible for any loss/ accident caused in the process and the cost of shifting/demolishing these encroachments shall be borne by the owner concerned.

However, skeptics feel that nothing much is going to change on the ground as all these encroachments have been taking place under the nose of the authorities with the connivance of some unscrupulous officials. "I do not have much faith in the authorities. I made several complaints in the past about such encroachments, but no action was taken. With Assembly elections round the corner, I do not think the politicians would like to invite the wrath of thecitizens. The 10-day period will be over on August 7. Let us see what action is taken this time around," said Wg Cdr (retd) AS Ahluwalia, a resident of Sector 16-A.
